Topic: Northern Survivors of Île-à-la-Crosse: Voices of Survival and Healing

Survivors Dwayne Desjarlais, Jerry Gardiner, and Angus Gardiner speak about the loneliness, abuse, loss, and lasting trauma they experienced within the residential school system. They share memories of being separated from family, forbidden from speaking their language, and carrying painful stories for decades in silence. Through reflection, courage, and a commitment to truth-telling, these Survivors honour those who never returned home, support one another in healing, and ensure that future generations understand the realities of what happened so that it is never forgotten.

NCTR's spirit name - bezhig miigwan, meaning "one feather".

Bezhig miigwan calls upon us to see each Survivor coming to the NCTR as a single eagle feather and to show those Survivors the same respect and attention an eagle feather deserves. It also teaches we are all in this together — we are all one, connected, and it is vital to work together to achieve reconciliation.
